GRE OVERVIEW

GRE is an acronym for Graduate Record Examination. It has 3 sections-

Quantitative Reasoning
Verbal Reasoning
Analytical Writing

Below is an example of GRE question:

An insurance company provides coverage according to the following rules: the company pays 80
percent of the first $1,200 of cost and 50 percent of the cost above $1,200. If a patient had to pay
$490 of the cost of a certain procedure himself, how much is the actual cost of the procedure?

A. $1,200
B. $1,300
C. $1,500
D. $1,700
E. $1,800

SOLUTION

Now just watch as i solve this step by step.
Let the actual cost of the procedure be k. Since the insurance company paid 80% of the first $1200 of the procedure, it means that the patient paid the remaining 20%. That is 20/100 x 1200 =240

After deducting 1200 from k we now have (k-1200) left. It is stated that after deducting the first $1200 the insurance company now paid 50% of what is left. Therefore the man paid the other 50% which is
50/100 x (k-1200).

This means the man paid a total of 240 + 50/100 x(k-1200)

which is the same as 240 + 1/2 x (k-1200). It is stated in the question that the man paid $490,
Therefore, 240 + 1/2 x (k-1200) = 490. We now have an equation and we need to solve for k.

1/2 x (k-1200) = 490-240
1/2 x (k-1200) = 250
Multiplying both sides of the equation by 2,
k-1200 = 500
k = 500+1200
k = 1700 which is (D)
