The Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) with headquarters in Abuja is incorporated in Nigeria as a Professional, non-Profit making, non – Governmental organization which is committed to the protection, development and sustenance of the environment and to the promotion of the profession of Environmental Science and Engineering, both in theory and practice.
NES obtained recognition in 1991 by the Federal government as the “Premier Environmental Society in Nigeria ”, and the “Watchdog of the environment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.
The Society has been accredited by the United Nations and given UN economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC) status in 1991.
The Society actively in both local and international environmental Programmes, Like the World Environment Day ,
The society was duly represented at the epoch-making United Nations Conference on environment and Development (UNCED), popularly referred to as the Earth Summit” held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on June 3-4 1992
NES participated at the Earth Summit II i.e. World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), held in Johannesburg, South Africa from August 26th to September 4th 2002
The Society has been formally accorded a place on the National council on Environment and membership of the National Housing Policy Council as well as on the Lagos State Advisory sub-committee (technical) on Environment.Pioneered the (Council of Environmental Practitioner (COEP) to professionalize Environmental practice in Nigeria through National Assembly
